Issue : Normal Saline Solution spilled out of lens before insert.
Solution
- Place your scleral lens directly on top of the suction cup (plunger) and fill the lens with normal saline.
- Placing a mirror flat on the table in front of you will be helpful.
- Look down directly at the mirror and tuck your chin into your chest; your nose should be perpendicular to the floor.
- Open your eyes wide and then move the suction cup toward your eyes without spilling the saline.
- Place the scleral lens onto your eye, then close your eyes.
Issue : Cannot insertion lens (stuck or blink)
Solution : The problem of lens insertion usually occur from the following reasons.
- Feeling scared to touch your eyes?
- Can’t open your eyes wide? The right way to open your eyes is to open them as wide as possible without blinking.
- Avoid blinking during lens insertion.

Issue : Poor vision after wearing the lens.
Solution :
- Bubbles underneath the lens (most common): If you see bubbles underneath the lens, it can cause discomfort as well as poor vision, and it may be necessary to remove and reinsert the lens.
- Dirty lens: The lens may have protein deposits, which can be resolved by using a protein cleaner solution (Progent) at least every 2-3 months.
- Incorrect lens wearing: Make sure to check that the lens is positioned correctly before insertion. If you can’t remember, please call Dr. Bird for assistance.
Issue : Feel pain and red eyes after wearing the lens.
Solution : The discomfort and pain in your eyes after wearing the lens usually occur for the following reasons.
- Foreign body underneath the lens (most important): You may need to remove, clean the lens, and reinsert it.
- Damaged, chipped, or broken lens: If you remove the contact lens and notice that it is defective, do not insert it again, as it can cause eye injury. You should call to order a new lens.
- Hypersensitivity to preservatives: Contact lens solutions often contain preservatives, which may cause pain and redness in the eyes. Clean the lens with normal saline before wearing it to avoid exposure to preservatives.
Note: You should discard normal saline 14 days after opening, as it does not contain preservatives. Using normal saline beyond 14 days may introduce bacteria into the bottle, so do not soak the lens in it. - Unclean hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before handling your lenses.
- Taking too long to insert the lens: If you find yourself struggling, you may feel better if you close your eyes for a moment. Practicing how to insert the lens can help you become quicker and more efficient.

- Soaking the lens: Soak the lens in Clear Care for less than 6 hours. If you experience burning eyes, remove the lens and clean it with normal saline several times; this should help alleviate the discomfort. If you still feel burning in your eyes after 4 hours or more, you should see an ophthalmologist.
- Hypersensitivity to preservatives: Contact lens solutions often contain preservatives, which may cause pain and redness in the eyes. To avoid hypersensitivity, clean the lens with normal saline before wearing it.
